Crime graph looks upward in Sivaganga district; locked homes are being targeted by miscreants

Locked homes in Devakottai, Manamadurai, Karaikudi and a few other locations are being targeted by robbers in Sivaganga district that in the last 30 to 45 days alone, series of house break-ins and waylaying had been reported.

The latest offence was reported in Kalayarkoil police station limits, where a masked-man robbed ₹ 20,000 cash from a petrol bunk staff on night duty. Police said that the bunk, owned by Joseph, situated in Puliyadithambam on Madurai-Thondi highway was targeted by the masked man. The staff identified as Ramesh, was a differently-abled person.

Brandishing a knife, the staff fearing risk to his life, handed over the cash bag. After taking away the money, the robber escaped in the cover of darkness. on Wednesday. Police have captured a few images from the CCTV and are on the look out for the accused.

Residents in the district said that many crimes were reported in locked homes.

Paramasivam of Annamalai Nagar in Manamadurai said that he had lost silver articles from his dwelling. Another resident Pandi said that he had lost 17 sovereigns of gold jewels and ₹80,000 in cash.

Recently, a Tasmac outlet supervisor was waylaid and ₹82,000 was robbed from him on the Milahanoor Pudukulam area in the district. In Devakottai sub-division, a resident Kumar living near Kailasanathar Temple lost 10 sovereigns of gold kept in his house. When he returned, he found the valuables missing.

Likewise, a school teacher Meenakshi lost ₹30,000 in cash after she had kept in her house and went away. A Tahsildar Shanti in Karaikudi lost 65 sovereigns of gold jewels recently.

Recovered

Police said that six sovereigns of gold jewels and a car was recovered from two accused. Based on the confession, the police found that the two accused - Saravanan (42) and Vignesh (35) of Ramanathapuram district had allegedly stolen from a locked house in Devakottai. Further investigation was on.
