CPI(M) seeks clarification from TVK-led government on Mekedatu resolution.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) Central Committee Member U. Vasuki has sought a clarification from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led Tamil Nadu government on the inclusion of DMK’s proposal for the formation of a Tribunal on Mekedatu issue in the resolution against the construction of the Mekedatu dam passed on the floor of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly recently.

Addressing the media at Thanjavur on Thursday, Ms. Vasuki said the Mekedatu dam construction must be stopped, for which several farmers’ bodies were on the streets. “At the same time, we have a question that how the present TVK-led government had included the previous DMK government’s proposal for formation of a Tribunal to find a solution to the Mekedatu issue, in the resolution passed at the Assembly,” she asked.

Though it was the prerogative of the present government to frame resolutions, the TVK-led government was bound to explain the reason behind the inclusion of the DMK’s proposal in the resolution to all political parties and farmers associations, the CPI(M) Central Committee member said.

Stating that the construction of a dam across Cauvery River at Mekedatu would not be beneficial to Tamil Nadu farmers, she exhorted the Tamil Nadu government to take steps to prevent Mekedatu project.

Dwelling deep into paddy procurement problem being faced by the Delta farmers, Ms. Vasuki wanted to know who should be held responsible for the present scenario of old gunny bag stockpiles at the godowns created for storing paddy procured from farmers and sought an inquiry into this issue.
