Boston Dynamics tries using robot dogs for deliveries
Boston Dynamics is testing its quadruped robot, Spot, as a potential solution for last-mile logistics and package deliveries. The initiative explores using robot dogs to bridge the gap between delivery vehicles and customer doorsteps.
Boston Dynamics is expanding the functional capabilities of its robotic dog, Spot, by testing it for package delivery applications. While the quadruped has previously been utilized for factory inspections and patrolling historical sites like Pompeii, this new application focuses on the logistical challenges of reaching residential doorsteps.
To facilitate this, the company has developed a specialized conveyor belt accessory. This hardware allows Spot to autonomously transport packages from a delivery vehicle and unload them at a specific destination, potentially reducing the human labor required for the final stage of delivery.
The testing phase aims to determine if the robot's ability to navigate uneven terrain and stairs offers an advantage over traditional wheeled delivery bots. This move signals an effort to broaden the commercial utility of the Spot platform beyond industrial and security sectors. Source: Boston Dynamics via various industry reports.
