Birla enters renewables top tier with $1.8 bn Sprng deal

The Aditya Birla Group, led by Kumar Mangalam Birla, has finalized the acquisition of Sprng Energy for $1.8 billion. The deal involves purchasing the renewable energy platform from its previous owner, Shell, as part of a broader push to scale up clean energy operations within the conglomerate.

This transaction is set to more than double the group's existing clean power capacity. By integrating Sprng Energy’s assets, the Aditya Birla Group moves into a competitive position alongside India’s largest renewable energy players, reflecting a major shift in its capital allocation toward sustainable infrastructure.

The move comes at a time of intensifying competition in the Indian renewable market, where major industrial houses are vying for market share to meet national energy transition targets. The acquisition provides the group with immediate scale and an operational pipeline of wind and solar projects across the country.
