THE WHAT? Brazilian retailer Assaí has announced the launch of its own pharmacy business, opening its first in-store pharmacy in São Paulo as it expands into the healthcare and personal care market.
THE DETAILS The move follows new Brazilian legislation permitting pharmacies to operate within supermarkets in dedicated spaces staffed by qualified pharmacists. Assaí plans to open 25 pharmacies across São Paulo state during the second half of 2026 as a pilot programme before considering a wider rollout. The pharmacies will offer prescription and over-the-counter medicines, alongside dermocosmetics, vitamins, supplements and personal care products. Additional healthcare services, including blood pressure monitoring, glucose testing, injections and rapid tests, will also be available.
THE WHY? The expansion reflects the growing convergence of retail, healthcare and beauty, allowing supermarkets to broaden their health and wellness offering while creating new distribution opportunities for dermocosmetics and personal care brands in Brazil.
