The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred on Saturday at 9:24 pm local time. The seismic event was centered approximately 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) west-southwest of the city of Sicaya, located in the Huancayo province of the Peruvian Andes.
Data provided by the USGS indicates that the earthquake originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles). This proximity to the surface intensified the shaking felt by residents in the surrounding highlands and led to the reported loss of life and property damage.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected region to assess the full extent of the destruction and provide aid to displaced families.
