A senior leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), S. Niranjan Reddy, has accused the Telangana government of inaction regarding Andhra Pradesh's substantial water diversion from the Srisailam reservoir. Reddy, a former minister, stated that the current administration has remained a "mute spectator" to Andhra Pradesh drawing large volumes of water through the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator (PRP-HR).

Reddy's remarks came after he was reportedly stopped by Andhra Pradesh police from approaching PRP-HR in Kurnool district on Thursday. He alleged that the Telangana government, led by Revanth Reddy, has failed to prevent Andhra Pradesh from diverting Krishna river water to non-basin areas. This is occurring during an El Nino year, a period when both states are experiencing water scarcity, particularly affecting areas within the Krishna Basin in Telangana.

The BRS leader highlighted a disparity in water usage, noting that Telangana's farmers are being advised to grow only irrigated-dry crops, not paddy, due to El Nino's impact. Simultaneously, he claimed, Andhra Pradesh is allowed to draw approximately 4-5 thousand million cubic feet (tmc ft) of water daily via gravity from PRP-HR. In contrast, Telangana draws only about 0.2 tmc ft daily for the Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme, even with all pumps operating, making the drawal of 1 tmc ft take several days.

Reddy further asserted that while Andhra Pradesh officially records a drawal of 10,000 cusecs through PRP-HR, the actual amount is closer to 50,000 cusecs. He added that the Telangana government's silence on this matter is based on the assertion that the water belongs to Andhra Pradesh. The BRS leader also pointed out that water from the Kalwakurthy lift has only reached 102 km of its 162 km main canal, despite significant flow in the Krishna river and releases from Jurala. Clarity on water allocation for the Jurala ayacut and associated lifts was reportedly absent at a recent Irrigation Advisory Board meeting.
