# Rishab Shetty to Receive Leadership Honor as IFFM 2026 Spotlights Kannada Cinema

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will honor filmmaker Rishab Shetty with its Leadership in Cinema Award. The festival's 17th edition also features a dedicated Kannada showcase including the acclaimed feature Ammang Helbeda.

## Recognition for the Architect of the Kantara Franchise

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) has announced that Kannada filmmaker, writer, and actor Rishab Shetty will receive the Leadership in Cinema Award at its upcoming 2026 edition. This accolade highlights Shetty's role in elevating regional storytelling to a global platform. Organizers described him as a visionary who reshapes Indian narrative possibilities by blending local folklore with cinematic scale.

Shetty expressed his gratitude for the recognition, noting that his work aims to celebrate the traditions and communities of his heritage. Since the success of Kantara, he has become a prominent voice in the industry by merging spiritual heritage and ecology into visual narratives. He is currently involved in several high-profile projects, including Jai Hanuman, directed by Prasanth Varma, and a Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj biopic directed by Sandeep Singh, which stars Bhumi Pednekar as Belawadi Mallamma.

## Kannada Showcase: From Busan to Melbourne

Scheduled from August 13 to August 26, the festival presents a robust selection of Kannada language films. A primary highlight is the feature film Ammang Helbeda (Don’t Tell Mother), directed by Anoop Lokkur. After premiering at the 2025 Busan International Film Festival and appearing at the Bengaluru International Film Festival, this production explores complex human bonds.

### Diverse Narratives and Emerging Voices

The 17th edition of IFFM broadens its scope with a selection of non-fiction and short-form content from the region:
- Bhaavi (The Well): A documentary designed to provide a thought-provoking perspective on its subject matter.
- Mungarina Ette (Heralds of the Monsoon): A short film investigating the intersection of nature, memory, and sentiment.
- Pankaja: An additional short film selected to highlight the technical and creative growth of regional creators.

The festival continues its tradition of blending commercial powerhouses with independent art, as evidenced by the concurrent acting nominations for icons like Aamir Khan and Mammootty.
