Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been issued a notice by the Lok Sabha Committee of Privileges, requiring him to submit a response by August 28. This action follows a breach of privilege notice filed against him by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur.

The notice stems from allegations that Mr. Gandhi used unparliamentary language and made unsubstantiated accusations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These incidents allegedly occurred during a debate on the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, on July 29.

According to Mr. Thakur's letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on July 30, Mr. Gandhi allegedly used derogatory terms such as "idiots" and "andhbhakts." The notice further states that Mr. Gandhi may have violated parliamentary rules by disregarding the Chair's instructions and by levelling allegations against a minister without prior notice.

Separately, BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal also wrote to the Speaker on July 29, urging action regarding Mr. Gandhi's alleged use of unparliamentary expressions against the Home Minister during the same debate. The Committee of Privileges will review both complaints after receiving Mr. Gandhi's reply.
