Karnataka Housing Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan has drawn criticism from the BJP for seeking to be relieved of the duty of hoisting the national flag on Independence Day. The Chief Minister's office had assigned ministerial colleagues the responsibility of unfurling the tricolour in various districts, with Minister Khan allocated Vijayanagara.

In a letter to Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, Mr. Khan cited a need to concentrate on preparations for upcoming local body and Assembly by-elections, as well as party organizational work. He stated he lacked sufficient time to fulfill the district in-charge responsibilities alongside election preparations. The minister also noted he had completed his assessment of the drought situation in Vijayanagara and submitted his report.

## Opposition Reaction

The BJP expressed strong disapproval of Minister Khan's request. Party representative Ashok stated that the minister's claim of being too busy with elections and party duties was a disgrace to the Constitution and an insult to Indians. He questioned how a cabinet minister could view hoisting the national flag on Independence Day as a burden compared to political activities. The BJP asserted that for Minister Khan and the Karnataka Congress, political power and party loyalty take precedence over national pride and the flag.
