An inquiry committee's report concerning allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma has been presented in the Rajya Sabha. The proceedings were initiated following the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash at his official residence.

Secretary General P C Mody tabled the two-volume report, which includes oral and documentary evidence from the investigation. The three-member panel had previously submitted its findings to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in May. The Speaker had established the committee on August 12, 2025, to investigate claims of cash found in the judge's Delhi residence.

A fire at Justice Varma's official residence on the night of March 14, 2025, led firefighters to reportedly discover significant amounts of burnt currency in a storeroom. Justice Varma has since resigned, making the removal proceedings largely moot. His resignation has not yet been officially noted by the law ministry.

Following the controversy, Justice Varma, formerly a judge of the Delhi High Court, was returned to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court. An internal committee, formed by then CJI Sanjiv Khanna, concluded that Justice Varma had direct or indirect control over the storeroom where the cash was found. In July 2025, over 200 Members of Parliament supported a motion to impeach the judge. The Judges Inquiry Committee was constituted in August of the same year to examine the charges.

Facing potential removal by Parliament, Justice Varma resigned from the Allahabad High Court, which rendered the impeachment proceedings ineffective. According to judicial procedure, a judge is considered to have resigned upon submitting their resignation to the President and circulating a copy, without requiring presidential acceptance.
