The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has put forward a proposal to fine residents ₹25,000 for abandoning pet dogs within the city. This resolution will take effect once approved by the Corporation Council in an upcoming meeting. Currently, no penalty exists for pet owners who abandon their animals.

The GCC attributes an increase in the stray dog population across several city zones to residents deserting their pets. The civic body has registered 115,548 pets across its 15 zones and issued microchipped pet licenses to 78,328 animals.

In an effort to combat rabies, the GCC conducted an anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) drive last year, inoculating 147,000 dogs. This year, the corporation aims to vaccinate 200,000 dogs. A mass vaccination camp for both pets and stray dogs, including ARV and endectoparasiticidal treatments, is scheduled to commence in the Tiruvottiyur, Manali, and Tondiarpet zones. The camp intends to vaccinate approximately 3,000 dogs daily, with a target of covering around 200,000 dogs within 75 working days. Free ARV vaccinations will be provided to pet dogs and cats during this camp.

Data from the GCC indicates that in the first six months of the current year, 15,477 residents reported issues related to stray dogs. Tondiarpet recorded the highest number of complaints with 1,869, while Manali reported 280. Several other zones, including Madhavaram, Royapuram, Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, and Adyar, have each received over 1,000 stray dog-related complaints during the same period. Over the past six months, the GCC has captured 26,498 dogs for animal birth control measures in residential areas.
