# July Cauvery Water for Tamil Nadu Hits 50-Year Low

Tamil Nadu received the lowest amount of Cauvery water in July in 50 years, with realization at just 0.698 tmcft against a stipulated 31.24 tmcft. This marks the worst July for the state in half a century regarding its share of the river's water.

## Key takeaways

- Tamil Nadu received only 0.698 tmcft of Cauvery water in July, the lowest in 50 years.
- This amount is significantly lower than the stipulated 31.24 tmcft for the month.
- The previous July low at Biligundulu was 2.441 tmcft in 2003.
- Total realization for June and July was 3.613 tmcft against a requirement of 40.43 tmcft.

Tamil Nadu has experienced its driest July in 50 years concerning the realization of its allocated share of Cauvery river water. The amount of water received during the month did not exceed one thousand million cubic feet (tmcft), standing at 0.698 tmcft. This figure falls significantly short of the stipulated 31.24 tmcft for July.

The current realization at Biligundulu, the designated measuring site since 2013, highlights the severity of the shortfall. The previous lowest for July at Biligundulu was 2.441 tmcft in 2003. Historically, the Mettur dam served as the reference point until 2012, and that same month in 2003 also recorded a low of 1.5 tmcft for Mettur.

Data from a High Level Technical Team on Cauvery, formed by the Supreme Court in 2016, indicates long-term averages for July. At Mettur, the 25-year average realization was 33.7 tmcft, and the 42-year average was 36.2 tmcft. For Biligundulu, the averages were 36.871 tmcft (25-year) and 39.087 tmcft (42-year).

The Tamil Nadu government filed an application with the Supreme Court on Monday, stating that as of August 2, the total realization at Biligundulu for June, July, and August was 3.687 tmcft. This included 2.915 tmcft in June, 0.698 tmcft in July, and 0.074 tmcft in August. According to the Tribunal’s final award, as amended by the Supreme Court, the state should have received 40.43 tmcft in the first two months of this period.
