The Andaman and Nicobar administration is seeking feasibility proposals for the development of a private sector-led "Green AI/ Data Centre Vertical" across the islands. This initiative has been launched via an expression of interest (EoI) and comes amid ongoing discussions about a ₹91,000-crore mega infrastructure project on Great Nicobar Island. The EoI, issued on August 10, aims to gauge market interest from potential private sector partners.

Potential locations identified for the data centre project include sea areas in Hutbay and Netaji Nagar on Little Andaman. On Great Nicobar Island, areas along Campbell Bay, Anderson Bay, Vijay Nagar Bay, and Gandhi Nagar Bay have been designated. These locations overlap with zones planned for various developments under the mega infrastructure project, such as wildlife corridors, tourism, agriculture, and residential areas.

The administration is interested in proposals that include solutions for renewable energy-powered operations and freshwater-free cooling systems, potentially utilizing seawater. The scope also encompasses hyperscale and AI-focused infrastructure, high-performance computing, cloud computing, and digital connectivity, including submarine and terrestrial links. The EoI also suggests exploring waste-heat recovery for applications like desalination.

Officials involved in the larger infrastructure project stated they were unaware of any plans to incorporate a data centre. Members of the local Tribal Council of Great and Little Nicobar, who recently met with the administration to discuss the draft master plan, reported no information had been shared regarding a data centre project. The proposals are due by September 24, with the administration indicating its role would be to facilitate coordination and provide institutional support for enabling infrastructure.
